In the last few months, Instagram has released a lot of policy changes and features that intend to make the platform a safer place for users. Especially after the incident when an employee-turned-whistleblower leaked several internal documents, releasing several serious allegations against the company. It was during this time that Instagram’s parent company, Facebook decided to rebrand to Meta, an organization where virtual reality is its priority.
Since then, users have seen features that allow them to set timers for breaks and limit their overall application usage. Lately, Instagram has been asking users to enter their birthday if users deny for a couple of times, and their accounts are being removed. Why is this happening? Since Instagram has a vast audience of different age groups, it is natural for the application to have varied content as well. However, this raises a concern of young Instagram users coming across inappropriate content that might have a negative impact on their life.
Back in August 2021, Instagram VP of Youth Products, Pavni Diwanji, announced that the platform would make it mandatory for all users to turn in their birthday-related information, including the date, month and year of birth. The platform will primarily use this information to provide a safer environment for young users. Since then, Instagram has sent constant reminders to users who haven’t entered their birthday information. However, if someone denies and fails to provide the information, the app will ban their account. Before this, Instagram asked new users to enter their date of birth before they could use the application.
How To Prevent An Instagram Account From Being Removed
At that time, Instagram did not specify a date from which entering their birthday would be compulsory for users, but it seems like the platform has already put the requirement in place. As a result, several Instagram users see a prompt asking them to add their birthday and options to learn more about the feature or deny it immediately. Unfortunately, the only way to fix it is to enter the correct birthday information by tapping on ‘Add Your Birthday’ on the relevant prompt, which then calculates their age. While this might not sound like a big deal, it could be for users below 13 who want to access the social media platform.
As per the revised Instagram guidelines, users must be at least 13 or older to have an account on the platform. As mentioned in the official support post, those who are not 13 will see a message that reads “You’re Not Old Enough to Use Instagram,” and ultimately, their Instagram account will be removed. While such users can still file an appeal, Instagram will only consider recalculating their age after verifying it. Once users enter their date of birth, Instagram will stop sending the prompts.
