Microsoft has announced the Surface Laptop Go 2, a follow-up to the Surface Laptop Go released in 2020. The Surface family of Windows devices includes both laptops, 2-in-1s, and All-in-Ones. As a result, Microsoft can cater to multiple segments with varying needs by offering different form factors.
The Surface Laptop Go used to be Microsoft’s cheapest laptop (not 2-in-1) but that changed when it announced the Surface Laptop SE in Nov. 2021. The $249 laptop runs Windows SE, a version of Windows designed for the classroom, and is a competitor to Google’s Chrome OS.
The Surface Laptop Go 2 keeps most of the predecessor’s design elements, such as an aluminum top, polycarbonate base, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Microsoft says it is also still the lightest Surface Laptop at 2.48 lbs (1.12 kg), although the 2020 model is a tad lighter at 2.45 lbs (1.11 kg). The array of ports has also remained the same — a single USB-C port, a USB-A port, and 3.5mm audio jack, and a Surface Connect port. The Surface Laptop Go 2 also comes in the same colors as its predecessor, in addition to a new Sage color.
Same Design, New Processor
A lot of the specs have remained unchanged too. The touchscreen is still a 12.4-inch PixelSense Display with a 1536 x 1024 resolution, and the QWERTY keyboard has a dedicated row for function keys and dedicated keys for controlling media playback. There is also still a fingerprint scanner buried under the power button for Windows Hello sign-in. What’s new is the 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor with Intel Iris X graphics, but folks are still limited to choosing between 4GB or 8GB of RAM with 128GB or 256GB of SSD storage.
In addition to a new processor, the Surface Laptop Go 2 also has an improved HD camera and dual Studio mics for a better video calling experience. The new laptop also has Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 6. Microsoft says that, like the 2020 model, the SSD storage is still replaceable but has extended it to other components such as the C-Cover (Keyset and Trackpad), AB Cover (Display) and battery. The spec sheet mentions a battery life of up to 13.5 hours based on typical usage. In addition, the computer will ship with Windows 11 Home and a 39W power adapter in the box.
The Surface Laptop Go 2 is already available for pre-order with a starting price of $599 for the base model with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. After that, it goes up to $599 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB version and maxes out at $799 for the 8GB RAM model with 256GB of storage. In typical Microsoft fashion, the availability of colors depends on the configuration, such as the new Sage colorway, which is exclusive to the 8GB RAM models.
