Nothing has confirmed the official launch date for its first smartphone. The exact details about the device, however, are still a mystery.
Tech startup Nothing has confirmed the official launch date for its first smartphone. Nothing is a new consumer electronics brand launched in 2020 by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. The company started by launching a pair of TWS earbuds last year before announcing plans to launch its first smartphone. However, not a lot has been officially confirmed about the upcoming Nothing phone (1), apart from it will run on Nothing OS based on Android.
Even though smartphone sales have grown exponentially over the past decade, the choice at the premium end of the market remains confined to a handful of brands, such as Apple, Samsung and OnePlus. With LG and HTC no longer making smartphones and Sony greatly reducing its presence in the market, smartphone buyers often complain about a lack of choice, especially in the premium segment. However, with Nothing making an entry this year, many expect greater choice and, with a little bit of luck, maybe better pricing for flagship phones.
According to a Nothing Twitter account tweet, the Nothing phone (1) will launch on July 12 at 4 p.m. U.K. time (11 a.m. ET). The company will unveil the device in London at a live event called ‘Return to Instinct’ that will also be live-streamed on the company’s official website, Nothing.tech. The company has also set up a notification option that enables users to enroll in its email newsletter to get notified when the event is underway. The company is calling the phone (1) its most important product, but other than that, it has been playing its cards close to its chest, having revealed precious little about it until now.
Nothing Phone (1) Hardware And Software
Apart from the Nothing phone (1) being powered by Android-based Nothing OS, the only other piece of information that the company has confirmed is that a Qualcomm processor will power it. Nothing has also claimed that the phone will offer a relatively clean, fast and smooth experience that will be “uniquely Nothing.” O2 will be the exclusive network partner for Nothing in the U.K., while Telekom Deutschland will be the sole operator for the device in Germany. In India, the phone will be sold unlocked via online retailer Flipkart. There’s currently no confirmation about whether the Nothing phone (1) will launch in the U.S.
The Nothing phone (1) is expected to ship with premium hardware, but there’s no word on what to expect. Online speculations suggest that a Qualcomm 8+ Gen 1 SoC could power the Nothing phone (1), but there’s no official confirmation from the company itself. There’s also some talk that the phone could use Sony IMX sensors for both its primary and selfie cameras, but again, it’s still only speculation for now. Nothing has become one of the most hyped consumer tech startups recently, even with just a single product in the market. With the launch of its first smartphone, it will be clear whether the hype surrounding Nothing is worth it or not.
