One of Instagram’s main components that make it a fun app to use is the ability to comment on people’s profiles, and there’s now a way to do so by using an avatar that resembles a user’s appearance. As a Facebook-owned company, Instagram lets users sync their profiles and use Facebook’s 3D avatar on both sites. However, those who prefer to create a fresh one specifically for Instagram use can do so, and they can use it as a fun way to reply to Instagram stories and direct messages.
There are other things to do through Instagram stories, such as share songs or even tag and mention people that appear in the post. Users can even do a little bit of shopping. A big part of an Instagram story’s appeal, though, is the ability to respond to them via direct message. Until recently, people could only send out preset emojis, a typed message or a GIF while viewing a story.
Now there’s an extra ‘Avatar’ tab that lets Instagram users comment with personalized stickers in stories and messages, but people first need to make an Instagram avatar through various methods. To create one from a user’s profile, launch the Instagram mobile app and tap the profile photo in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Hit ‘Edit Profile’ then ‘Create avatar.’ Users who’ve never created an avatar before can tap ‘Get started.’ Otherwise, the ‘Do you want to use your avatar from Facebook?’ screen will appear. Users can opt to use their current Facebook avatar or hit ‘No, create new avatar.’ Select a skin tone to apply to the avatar, then personalize it with hairstyles, facial features, outfits, and other things. Next, users can tap the camera icon to see themselves while creating the avatar to make it more accurate. Tap ‘Done’ at the top-right corner of the screen to save and create the avatar. Finally, users can edit avatars from the profile by tapping ‘Edit Profile’ and then selecting ‘Edit avatar.’
Other Ways To Create An Instagram Avatar
Users can also create avatars via an Instagram story or from a chat. Tap the + icon at the top-right to get to ‘Story’ then take a photo or a video, or tap the chat icon at the top-right, then hit one of the conversations in the chats list to open it. Next, hit ‘Stickers’ (square smiley icon), then select ‘AVATAR’ from the Instagram Story sticker options. Follow the same instructions listed for creating an avatar through a user’s profile. People can edit their avatars through these methods as well by hitting ‘Edit’ at the top corner of the screen after tapping ‘AVATAR’ from the Stickers menu. When an avatar is being edited, users can delete it by tapping the trashcan icon and then hitting ‘Delete,’ but it’s important to note that this action is permanent and irreversible.
Once an Instagram avatar is created, a set of personalized stickers that features it can be used in direct messages or as a part of Instagram stories. To do this and share it with friends, tap the chat icon at the top-right, choose a thread in the chats list to open it, or tap the + icon at the top-right to get to ‘Story’ and then take a photo or a video. Next, tap the square smiley icon, then pick ‘AVATAR.’ Tap on any sticker to share it in a chat or to add it to a story. For the latter, the sticker can be resized by pinching it or be moved by long-pressing it. Next, tap the arrow icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen, select where to share the story, then hit ‘Share.’
To react to a friend’s Instagram story using an avatar sticker, open their story on top of the main Instagram feed. Next, tap on the ‘Send Message’ bubble below—some accounts might have story replies disabled, so this won’t be doable—and hit the ‘Avatar’ tab. Finally, tap one of the avatar stickers suggested to send it as a reaction. The avatar reaction can be viewed through the chat thread with the user whose story was reacted to inside Instagram’s messages inbox.
